AIR CONDITIONING INSTRUCTOR | State Center Community College District | Fresno, CA State Center Community College District AIR CONDITIONING INSTRUCTOR Fresno City College Position No. 2738 Start Date: August 13, 2009 Application Deadline Friday, June 26, 2009, 4:30 p.m. (PST) Essential Functions of Position Include teaching subject areas in Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration (HVAC/R) and Environmental Controls. Typical courses include instruction in: safety, hand tools and use of instruments; basics of mechanical refrigeration, medium and low temp refrigeration, refrigerants, evacuation, charging, recovery; basic and advanced electricity, single and 3 phase power, motors, controls, control strategies; airflow measurement; use of psychrometrics as a diagnostic tool; gas fired (natural and LP) heating systems; flame control technologies; heat pumps; resistance heat; Uniform Mechanical/Plumbing Code and National Electrical Code as related to Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Environmental Controls; basic sheet metal fabrication; residential duct system layout and design; air conditioning and refrigeration system installation; technician preparation for HVAC/R certification exams. Include communicating effectively with students and staff; participating in course and curriculum design, program review, developing, constructing and coordinating the use of instructional aids; assisting with the development and monitoring of the instructional budget; student advising and college/district committees; participate in appropriate professional meetings and workshops; participate in recruiting activities; and otherwise fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required. Duties may include assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening, weekends, and/or off campus. Minimum Qualifications Include earned bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience directly related to the discipline, or earned associate degree and six years of professional experience directly related to the discipline and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Desirable Qualifications Include extent of teaching experience; extent of related work and professional experience; extent of training and practical experience in all aspects of HVAC/R and Environmental Controls. Evidence of the ability to involve students in practical applications of instruction as it is related to the industry; extent of experience working with students of various ages and cultural, economic and educational backgrounds; extent of knowledge and experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes; extent of commitment to professional growth; ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; strong computer skills; membership in professional HVAC/R organizations. The extent of additional licenses and/or certifications including: EPA Section 608, Type 1 & 2; California Licensed Contractor C20 and/ or C38. North American Technician Excellence (NATE) Certification in the following areas: Air Conditioning, Heat Pumps, Gas Furnace, Air Distribution. Earned Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) status by passing the: Certificate Member Exam (CM) and/ or a Certificate Member Specialist Exam(s) (CMS); Refrigerating Engineers & Technicians Association (RETA), Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO) and/ or Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO); to a lesser extent, Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) Industry Competency Exam (ICE) and/ or ESCO entry-level technician examinations passed. Conditions of Employment 177 duty days per year. Salary and Benefits Starting salary is $51,992 - $78,276 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $1,945 is available. Physical Demands May include but not limited to: Occasional squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, power grasping, pushing-pulling, carrying, lifting up to 60 pounds above the shoulders independently and up to 100 pounds below the waist with assistance; frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, fine hand manipulation, and reaching below the shoulder. Duties may include driving cars, trucks, vans and forklifts; working with training equipment; walking on uneven ground such as construction sites; exposure to noise associated with power tools and equipment; exposure to extremes in temperature humidity or wetness; exposure to dust inherent to AC repair, Freon, solvents, adhesives, lubricants, and welding fumes; and use of special visual or auditory protective equipment such as ear plugs, safety glasses, hard hat and welding goggles.
